At first sight, you might not even realise that Woodlands Memorial is a funeral parlour that houses the dead because of the exterior. The exterior looks so posh that it goes against the conventional image of what we have of a funeral parlour. At level 1, there is a drop off area that looks more like a hotel. Upon drop off, to the left and to the right are two lobbies where people can take a lift up to the funeral wake rooms. Even the lobbies are fully air conditioned with cushy sofas that make the entire place resemble the lobby of a condominium.

The en suite wake halls (each wake hall comes with an attached toilet and bedroom) allows rest time for the bereaved families as and when they need rest throughout the day. The bedroom has a bed and the bedsheets can be changed upon request. It feels like a hotel and if you're staying over for a few days to tend to a wake, you can treat it like a staycation where you find your own time and space to grieve and manage your own emotions.

Woodlands memorial is the newest funeral parlour in Singapore as of today. It boasts of 14 funeral wake halls and is the largest funeral parlour in terms of the number of wake halls. There is also an embalming room within the building and a few family rooms for the washing of the decedent. Three levels of this building houses wake rooms and two levels of this building houses ashes (it's a columbarium that is building in progress).

All in all, Woodlands Memorial is a good and comfortable option to have a funeral wake if you have the budget. If you feel that SGD1,800 is a little steep, then you might want to consider other venues.

The building of this funeral parlour that does not feel or seem like a parlour is a testament to how much Singapore has progressed as a society in reducing the stigma attached to death and funerals. I think this is a good sign, isn't it?

A humble service done in remembrance of Mr Tee Hock Chwee, founder of Hock Hin Undertaker established since 1963
