Burials In Singapore

Burials used to be the preferred mode of body disposal in Singapore after someone dies. Land scarcity has however prodded the government authorities to think of creative ways to keep burial land space within land that is allocated for burial in Singapore. Unlike in other countries where you get to purchase a land for the dead, you can only lease a land space for the dead up to 15 years. After 15 years, the burial land space has to be returned to the government if they so wish to have it back.

In Singapore, a burial plot for the dead is priced at SGD 940 for adults above 10 years of age and SGD 420 for children 10 years old and below. These lands are unanimously leased for 15 years and are situated at Choa Chu Kang Cemetery.

A crypt burial system is used instead of the traditional burial system to prevent soil erosion from moving the buried bodies underneath. Take note that you are not allowed to choose which crypt you would want your loved one to be buried in. The relevant authorities assign the crypt to you.

These limitations together with the steeper price of burials has caused Singaporeans to shift towards cremating the dead over the years. Cremations in Singapore can be done at 3 main places of which Mandai Crematorium at 300 Mandai Road is the only government-owned crematorium. This translates into lower price where cremations are being done at only SGD 100 for adults and SGD 50 for children below 10 years of age.

Cremations In Singapore

There are three crematoriums in total in Singapore.

Mandai Crematorium

The main one is the government one at 300 Mandai Road aptly called Mandai Crematorium. Cremations here are open for all religions in Singapore and are priced at $100 for adults and $50 for a child. There are 4 cremation halls at Mandai Crematorium and it is the only fully air-conditioned crematorium in Singapore with private halls and curtains. The cremation slots are in half an hour intervals and will usually start from 8.45am to about 6pm. In recent years, due to the rising death numbers, the crematorium has lengthened their opening hours to beyond the official hours when the need calls for it. The latest cremation slot ever witnessed was 10.30pm. Do note that the later cremation slots will be open only after the earlier ones are filled up. A new government crematorium is currently under construction near the one that is being used and is said to be ready over the next few years. There are two halls in Mandai Crematorium - service and viewing hall. The body with the coffin will be pushed into the cremator at the viewing hall. Those who feel uncomfortable with the scene can choose to go directly to the bus bay to wait for the completion of the cremation ceremony.

Bright Hill Temple

Bright Hill Temple is at 88 Bright Hill Road and has 3 cremation halls that are open-spaced which means that you can see who your mourning neighbours are if you happen to be allocated the same time slot for the cremation of your loved one as another family. The crematorium space is not air-conditioned. The price for the use of the crematorium is $324 and includes monk chanting fee and some basic prayer food items prior to the cremation. The viewing hall is the service hall as there is only one hall and no distinction made between them. There are very limited cremation slots each day, one in the morning, another in the noon and one in the afternoon.

Tse Tho Aum Temple

Tse Tho Aum Temple is at 601 Sin Ming Drive and the cremation fee is $432. Usually only one cremation can be conducted at a time. The cremation fee includes nun chanting and simple prayer food items. Take note that this place is not air-conditioned.

Columbaria

All of the three venues mentioned above has their own columbarium for the storage of ashes in niches. The government owned one at Mandai is the most pocket friendly as it costs $500 for one single niche. You can choose to purchase a family niche as well. The two other locations are privately owned and hence their prices would be steeper. The niches there are usually a few thousands for 30-50 years after which the ashes might have to be relocated if the government wishes to have that piece of land back.
