Hospital Mortuaries in Singapore: Locations & Collection Guide
Where each hospital mortuary is, how families reach it and how a funeral director collects your loved one, from first-hand experience.
24/7 deceased collection coordination·Official and first-hand information kept separate·Public and private hospitals
When someone dies in a Singapore hospital, one of the first practical questions is where the hospital mortuary is and how your loved one is collected. Not every mortuary is in the basement: some are in separate buildings and some are reached from unloading bays, and some collection points need a staff member to accompany you. Harmony Funeral Care’s funeral directors have collected deceased persons from public hospitals, private hospitals, community hospitals and hospices across Singapore. This guide sets out what the hospitals publish and what we have seen first-hand, and marks which is which.
Hospital mortuaries in Singapore at a glance
Most Singapore hospital mortuaries are in the basement, but not all: some are in separate buildings or at ground-level unloading bays. Singapore General Hospital (SGH) has two: the SGH Mortuary in the Emergency/NNI Building, Basement 1 (via Lobby D), for deaths that do not need further investigation, and Mortuary@HSA at SGH Block 9 for coroner cases. In Harmony Funeral Care’s experience, collection typically takes about an hour at private hospitals and one to four hours at public hospitals. These are our observations, not hospital targets or promised times.
Most hospital mortuaries release the deceased to an appointed funeral company that arrives with a vehicle, so families generally need to engage a funeral company before collection. Release always depends on medical certification and hospital or authority clearance. Harmony Funeral Care coordinates collection 24 hours a day, subject to the hospital’s release clearance and collection arrangements.
Singapore hospital mortuary locations at a glance
The table combines official SGH information with Harmony Funeral Care’s first-hand experience at other hospitals. Select a hospital name to jump to its details.
| Hospital | Mortuary location | Typical HFC collection time | Basis |

| Singapore General Hospital (SGH) | Emergency/NNI Building, Basement 1, via Lobby D | Varies; SGH publishes operating hours | Official (SGH) |
| Mortuary@HSA (SGH) | SGH Block 9, 9 Outram Road; coroner cases | Depends on case clearance | Official (SGH) |
| Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) | Basement 1 | 1–2 hours | HFC experience |
| National University Hospital (NUH) | Level 1, in a separate building from the ward | 2–3 hours | HFC experience |
| Changi General Hospital (CGH) | Basement 1 | 2–4 hours | HFC experience |
| Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) | Basement 1 | 2–4 hours | HFC experience |
| Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) | Basement 1, away from the wards | 2–4 hours | HFC experience |
| Alexandra Hospital | A separate building away from the main wards | 2–4 hours | HFC experience |
| Woodlands Health | Basement 1 | 1–2 hours | HFC experience |
| Sengkang General Hospital (SKH) | Basement 1, via Lobby 99 | 2–3 hours | HFC experience |
| KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) | Basement 1 (B1) | 1 hour or less for straightforward cases | HFC experience |
| Mount Elizabeth Hospital (Orchard) | Level 1, before the ramp, facing the entrance | About 1 hour | HFC experience |
| Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital | Basement 1 (B1), at the unloading bay area | About 1 hour | HFC experience |
| Gleneagles Hospital | Beside the unloading bay, at the side of the building | About 1 hour | HFC experience |
| Farrer Park Hospital | At the unloading bay | 1–2 hours | HFC experience |
| Mount Alvernia Hospital | Level 1, at the back, in a separate building from the ward | About 1 hour | HFC experience |
| Raffles Hospital | Car Park Level 2 | 1–2 hours | HFC experience |
“Typical HFC collection time” is the approximate time Harmony Funeral Care has experienced between arriving to collect and completing the handover. It is not an official hospital target or a promised time, and it varies with certification, release clearance, porter availability and the circumstances of each case. The KKH estimate applies to straightforward cases and should not be read as a timeframe for fetal remains or complex cases.
Do you need a funeral company to collect from a hospital mortuary?
In Harmony Funeral Care’s experience, most Singapore hospital mortuaries release the deceased to an appointed funeral company that arrives with a vehicle, together with the claimant or next of kin who authorises the release. NEA’s guidance for a death in hospital likewise says the family engages a funeral director, who collects the body from the hospital mortuary (see NEA: In a hospital). Families generally cannot take the deceased out of the mortuary themselves. Hospital procedures differ, so confirm the requirements with the ward or the mortuary, and engage a funeral company as early as possible, ideally once the death has been certified.
Appointing a funeral company before you travel lets the funeral director confirm the collection point and release clearance, prepare the documents, and arrive with the right vehicle at the right entrance, which matters because the mortuary entrances described below differ widely.
What the funeral director does at the hospital
- Confirms the collection point and clearance. We check which mortuary applies and whether the hospital or the relevant authority has cleared the release.
- Prepares the authorisation and identification documents. The claimant signs and identifies the deceased as the hospital requires.
- Meets the family at the hospital. We guide you to the collection point and stay with you through the handover.
- Transports the deceased. Our vehicle takes your loved one to the funeral preparation facility, where care and preparation begin.
- Plans the funeral with you. We then discuss the wake, venue and cremation or burial, and give an itemised quotation before you commit.
Funeral services and packages by tradition
Once your loved one has been collected, the next decision is the funeral itself. Choose the service that matches your family’s faith or tradition, or compare every package on one page.
What happens when someone dies in a Singapore hospital?
The medical team first completes the medical certification, or arranges further investigation where required. For deaths certified electronically, registration is automatic and no counter visit is needed. The family can then download the digital death certificate from LifeSG, using the death certificate number, the deceased’s ID document number and the date of death. The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) advises downloading and saving it within 30 days; after that it is no longer available to download. ICA has not issued physical death certificates since 29 May 2022. See ICA: Register and download a digital death certificate.
Once the hospital confirms that the deceased can be released, the appointed funeral director coordinates collection with the family and the hospital staff. In Harmony Funeral Care’s usual process, the funeral director prepares the authorisation and identification documents, meets the family at the hospital, assists with the handover and transports the deceased to the funeral preparation facility. For wider first steps, see our guide on what to do when someone passes away in Singapore.
What should families prepare?
- Identification documents for the claimant or next of kin.
- The deceased’s identification details and, where available, the digital death certificate.
- Any hospital release or authorisation forms the hospital requests.
- Clothing, underwear, shoes and dentures, where applicable.
- A recent photograph of the deceased, if helpful for funeral preparation.
- The family’s preferred funeral arrangements and religious customs.
Coroner and police cases are different
For cases referred to the police or the coroner, the release process differs and the family must wait for the relevant authority’s clearance. At SGH, coroner cases are handled at Mortuary@HSA rather than the regular SGH Mortuary. NEA explains that when a doctor cannot certify the death, the police are called and the body is taken to Mortuary@HSA; see NEA: In a hospital.
How this guide was prepared
Official information is taken from the hospital or agency that publishes it. In this guide that means the SGH mortuary page (for the SGH Mortuary and Mortuary@HSA, including hours and directions) and the ICA death certificate page, both checked on .
Harmony Funeral Care experience is what our funeral directors have observed while collecting deceased persons at each hospital: entrances, routes, who accompanies the family, landmarks, waiting areas and typical collection times. These observations are labelled “HFC experience”. They are not official hospital statistics, hospital layouts and procedures change, and families should confirm the current collection point with the hospital before travelling.
Singapore General Hospital (SGH) Mortuary vs Mortuary@HSA
Singapore General Hospital has two distinct mortuary facilities, and the right one depends on the circumstances of the death and the instructions of the hospital or relevant authority. Do not assume that every death at SGH is collected from Block 9: confirm the designated mortuary before travelling.
| Item | SGH Mortuary | Mortuary@HSA |
|---|---|---|
| Location | SGH Emergency/NNI Building, Basement 1, via Lobby D, 1 Hospital Boulevard, Singapore 168581 | SGH Block 9, 9 Outram Road, Singapore 169608 |
| Cases handled | Deaths that do not require further investigation | Coroner cases |
| Operating hours | Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4.30 pm; Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, 8 am to 12.30 pm | The same hours as the SGH Mortuary |
| Outside operating hours | Press the intercom at the entrance for assistance | Confirm with SGH or the relevant authority |
| By car | Enter via Hospital Boulevard and follow the signs to the Emergency/NNI Building; drop off at the entrance driveway or park in the basement carpark, then go to Lobby D and take the lift to Basement 1 | Drive along Outram Road; parking is available on site |
| By public transport | Take the SGH Campus Shuttle from Outram Park MRT Exit 6 or 7 and alight at the Emergency/NNI Building, then follow the signs to Lobby D | From Outram Park MRT Exit 7, walk along Outram Road past the National Cancer Centre Singapore; Block 9 is on the left |
SGH also publishes walking directions to the SGH Mortuary from the Emergency Department, from the main SGH block and from Outram Community Hospital. After office hours, SGH advises exiting through the side roller shutter when walking from the main block. An operating-hours listing does not by itself guarantee immediate release. Tips for families collecting a loved one from hospital
- Confirm the collection point first. Ask the ward nurse or the funeral director which mortuary applies, especially at Singapore General Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and the community hospitals that share a campus with an acute hospital.
- Plan for a wait. Collection can take about an hour at private hospitals and several hours at public hospitals in our experience. Bring water, and consider whether older family members should wait at home.
- Bring identification and clothing. The claimant usually needs to verify identity and sign for release. Clothing for the deceased can be handed to the funeral director.
- Let hospital staff guide you. At many hospitals the route to the mortuary is through restricted areas, so follow nursing or hospital staff or your funeral director.
- Tell the funeral director about religious customs early. If your family observes a period of minimal handling or specific rites, say so before collection. See our guides to Buddhist, Taoist, Christian and Catholic funerals.
Frequently asked questions about hospital mortuaries in Singapore
Where is the SGH mortuary?
The Singapore General Hospital (SGH) Mortuary is in the SGH Emergency/NNI Building, Basement 1, via Lobby D, at 1 Hospital Boulevard, Singapore 168581. It handles deaths that do not require further investigation. See SGH Mortuary vs Mortuary@HSA.
What are the SGH mortuary operating hours?
SGH publishes the mortuary hours as Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4.30 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, 8 am to 12.30 pm. Visitors arriving outside these hours are asked to press the entrance intercom for assistance, which does not by itself guarantee immediate release. Source: SGH mortuary directory.
Is the hospital mortuary the same as the HSA Mortuary?
No. For example, Singapore General Hospital’s regular mortuary is in the Emergency/NNI Building at Basement 1, while Mortuary@HSA is at SGH Block 9 and handles coroner cases. Confirm the designated mortuary with the hospital before travelling.
Do I need a funeral company to collect the deceased from a hospital mortuary?
In Harmony Funeral Care’s experience, most Singapore hospital mortuaries release the deceased to an appointed funeral company that arrives with a vehicle, together with the claimant who authorises the release, so families generally cannot collect the deceased themselves. Requirements differ by hospital, so confirm them with the ward or mortuary. Harmony Funeral Care provides 24-hour collection; see our funeral services and funeral packages.
Can a funeral director collect a deceased person from hospital at night?
Some Singapore hospitals facilitate after-hours collection. Harmony Funeral Care coordinates collection 24 hours a day, but the actual release depends on the hospital’s procedures, documentation and clearance.
Do family members need to attend the hospital mortuary?
In Harmony Funeral Care’s usual experience, the claimant or an authorised family member attends to verify identification, sign the necessary documents and authorise the release. Requirements differ between hospitals and circumstances, so confirm them with the hospital or your funeral director.
How long does it take to collect a deceased person from hospital?
Based on Harmony Funeral Care’s experience, straightforward collections at private hospitals take about an hour, while collections at several public hospitals take between one and four hours. These are observations, not hospital targets or promised times, and some cases take much longer.
What documents do we need for the death certificate?
Deaths certified electronically are registered automatically. Families can download the digital death certificate from LifeSG within 30 days, using the death certificate number, the deceased’s ID document number and the date of death. ICA has not issued physical death certificates since 29 May 2022. See ICA: Death certificate.
Is embalming compulsory after a hospital death?
No. Embalming is not automatically compulsory for every death in Singapore. Whether it is appropriate depends on the funeral arrangements, timing, the condition of the deceased and any applicable requirements, which your funeral director can explain.
Can families ask that the deceased be left untouched for eight hours?
Families can tell the hospital and the funeral director about religious or cultural preferences, including a period of minimal handling. It is not a universal medical requirement and may not be possible where identification, preservation, hospital operations or legal procedures require otherwise. See our Buddhist funeral services guide for related customs.
Is refrigeration harmful to the deceased?
Refrigeration is an established method of temporarily preserving a deceased person’s body and should not be regarded as inherently harmful. Families with concerns about preservation, embalming or religious customs should discuss the options with their funeral director.
Do hospitals charge mortuary fees?
Fees and charging arrangements can vary by hospital, the length of storage and the circumstances. Confirm the applicable charges directly with the hospital rather than assuming that all mortuary services are free.
Can a funeral director collect a deceased baby from KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH)?
Yes, subject to the hospital’s release requirements. The claimant may need to identify the baby’s remains and authorise release to the funeral director. Based on Harmony Funeral Care’s experience, collection hours for babies and fetal remains differ from those for adults, so confirm them for the individual case.
What happens after the funeral director collects the deceased?
The deceased is transported to the funeral preparation facility or another authorised destination according to the arrangements. The funeral director then coordinates preparation, dressing, the casket, wake logistics and the eventual burial or cremation. See our funeral packages for what each arrangement includes.
24-hour hospital deceased collection by Harmony Funeral Care
Because most mortuaries release the deceased to an appointed funeral company with a vehicle, it helps to engage one early. Families should not have to work out unfamiliar mortuary entrances, paperwork and funeral arrangements alone. Harmony Funeral Care coordinates hospital collection, identification and release, transport, body preparation, funeral planning and the arrangements for cremation or burial, with first-hand collection experience at the hospitals listed above.
