Soka is a Japanese-Buddhist religion that focuses on the teachings of the 13th century Japanese Priest Nichiren. Members of the Soka religion believe in eternal life and the law of causality. To them, death is an important transition. In the “Heritage of the Ultimate Law Of Life”, it was stated by Daishonin to chant the ‘Nam-myoho-renge-kyo’ with steadfast faith even at the hour of death.

The Soka Association is a tight knitted group of community where members extend support to one another even during funerals. Chanting is usually done by Soka members so as to borrow upon the power of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, to guide the deceased towards enlightenment (Eagle Peak). This particular chant is claimed to be powerful enough to turn evil into goodness. During Sokka Funerals in Singapore, it is not uncommon for believers to offer to recite the sutra out of pure intentions as a way to direct the deceased towards enlightenment. In fact, this is believed to be the best way to mourn and sympathise with the family.
